What do fishing and art have in common?
Yep, I wondered that one, too! I don’t do craft shows, or seafood festivals…I DO FINE ARTS FESTIVALS….juried ones… I wanted people walking around with one purpose in mind…buying art! But, for every rule, there is an exception!
I met an artist at ArtsQuest in Sandestin this year…Johnny Townsend..an amazing bronze sculptor. He was so enthusiastic and engaging, that he actually talked me into attending a fishing rodeo in Gulf Breeze FL. It had three elements that I am a proponent of: kids, art, and fundraising.
So, a couple of hot Saturdays ago, I loaded up my art and my kids and headed west to the 26th Annual Sertoma Fishing Rodeo. Sertoma stands for Service To Many and 100% of the money raised goes to children’s charities in their area.
I set up my tent, hung up my art and sent my kids to the “Learn to Cast” booth. All the kids got a brand new fishing pole, tackle box, and great instruction on how to fish! We had a blast! They learned about different fish species, how to tie knots, and my daughter’s fave: a marine touch pool! My art got rave reviews, the fishing rodeo was exciting, and the food was awesome!
I hope the folks there raised a ton of money for some great causes! The best part!? We ALL caught some fish! Thank you for hosting us Johnny!!
