Mary Hong Originals vs. Licensed Reproductions: How to Tell the Difference

If you own a piece of art in Mary Hong’s signature style, you may be wondering: Is this an original or a licensed reproduction? Where is Mary’s art sold? Who should I contact about my artwork? These are some of the most frequently asked questions we receive, and we’re here to help!

Understanding Mary Hong Originals

Mary Hong’s original artworks are one-of-a-kind creations, personally crafted by Mary herself. These pieces are available for purchase directly through MaryHongStudio.com and at select galleries and vendors across the US who source directly from Mary. Because these are unique works, they hold special artistic and collectible value and are priced accordingly.

The Story Behind Licensed Reproductions

Over a decade ago, Mary was thrilled to partner with John-Richard, a globally recognized manufacturer of fine art, accessories, and furniture, to make her work more widely accessible. These licensed reproductions by John-Richard are high-quality giclée prints on canvas, finished with resin and crushed clear glass to maintain the signature texture of Mary’s originals. These reproductions are available at major retailers like Neiman Marcus, offering an affordable and accessible way to bring Mary’s art into homes and offices around the world.

How to Tell the Difference Between an Original and a Reproduction

The easiest way to distinguish a Mary Hong original from a licensed reproduction is by checking for these key details:

Licensed Reproductions:

  • Feature a digitally printed “Hong” signature in a lower corner.
  • Are produced in collaboration with John-Richard and sold at retailers worldwide.

Mary Hong Originals:

  • Are always hand-signed and dated on the back.
  • Many (though not all) include a hand-drawn “M” on clear glass in the lower right-hand corner.

These signatures are shown below.
