AWARD-WINNING GLASS ARTIST MARY HONG EXPANDS
MAKE-YOUR-OWN ART CONCEPT TO THE EMERALD COAST BY OPENING
A NEW GALLERY IN DESTIN, FLORIDA
Grand Opening Festivities are set for July 6-8 Weekend
GRAYTON BEACH, FLORIDA (June 29, 2017) – Artist Mary Hong announces the opening of two new art galleries on the Emerald Coast.
The Shard Shop, a make-your-own art boutique and Mary Hong Gallery, a contemporary art gallery, are located within the same space at 34940 Emerald Coast Pkwy, Suite 114 in Destin, Fla. in The Shoppes at Paradise Isle retail plaza (next to Michael’s and Ulta Beauty).
“I am beyond thrilled to be expanding both my art presence and make-your-own glass art concept on the Emerald Coast where I live, work and play” said artist Mary Hong. “Destin holds a special place in my heart, because I showcased my work for the first time here. Now, I’m honored to be able to invite art lovers of all ages into this exciting new boutique gallery space to have fun while creating original works of glass art with the guidance of my talented team of trained professionals.”
Hong describes the art making experience in her shop as “fine art mosaic with a twist of the unexpected.” She (and her trained team of artists) teach her trademarked technique ShardWorx ™ — artwork made with glass and resin on canvas — on-site at her Shard Shop galleries.
The art making process is simple. Guests are provided a prepared canvas. They choose the glass shards, trinkets and treasures and “paint” their masterpiece by arranging them on the canvas. The Shard Shop team sets and protects the art by pouring a resin on top of the painting which is available for pick up the next day. Prices are based on the size of the canvas.
Grand opening festivities for the Destin The Shard Shop gallery are set for Thursday, July 6 though Saturday, July 8. The celebration is free and open to the public. Guests of the gallery will enjoy discounts, giveaways, cake, refreshments and more.
Store hours for the Destin location are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 7 p.m.
Classes are offered in Destin Monday through Saturday at 9:30 a.m. (adults only); 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m. 5 p.m. and on Sundays at 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Classes are from $40 for children and $85 for adults.
All classes are 20 percent off as part of the Grand Opening special (through July 8). The second Saturday of each month is designated as Locals Day. On this day locals enjoy 20 percent off class registration.
Details and information can be found online at ShardShop.com, where you can register for a class, book a birthday party, special event or team building session; purchase art kits, supplies and gift cards, and even inquire about franchise opportunities. The website also features links to free step-by-step tutorial videos that demonstrate how to create various kinds of artwork.
The award-winning artist owns the original Shard Shop located in Grayton Beach and Mary Hong Studio Gallery (located adjacent). Mary Hong plans to expand both her Shard Shop concept and Mary Hong gallery brand nationwide. As part of that long-term vision, a Shard Shop is opening this week in New Orleans, La. and a Mary Hong Gallery is slated to open soon in Nashville, Tenn.
“I want to share my passion for glass art making with the world!” she says.
A professional artist for 23 years, Hong considers herself “a glass artist who paints” and has participated in group and solo exhibitions in the U.S. and France. She opened the Mary Hong Gallery in Grayton Beach in 2012 and added the first hands-on art-making studio, The Shard Shop in 2015.
Hong is the proud recipient of the 2014 Artist of the Year award from the South Walton Tourist Development Council. Locally, a collection of her work can be seen throughout the Salamander Spa at The Henderson, the new luxury resort hotel in Destin.
Hong recently was selected as a special category winner of the [PLATFORM] Artist of the Year 2016. The prestigious international art competition produced by Redwood Media Group and sponsored by Art Brand Studios selected Mary Hong at the first-place winner for Mixed Media. As a special category winner Mary Hong was invited to exhibit her artwork on at Spectrum Miami during Miami Art Week. Last winter she participated in a Group Exhibit at Bev’s Fine Art in Raleigh, N.C. and this past spring she exhibited in San Diego and at Art Expo New York at Pier 94 in New York City.
Hong has several upcoming events. She will be exhibiting July 12-15 at Art Santa Fe in New Mexico July 12-15 as part of Redwood Media Group’s International Art Festivals.
Twice a month she creates pre-ordered artwork for customers in real time during ShardWorx ™ Live, which is streamed on Facebook. Visit her MaryHongStudio.com and follow Mary Hong Studio on Facebook for dates and times.
On July 12 from 6 to 8 p.m., she will be presenting a live workshop at the Henderson Beach Resort in Destin. Registration is $75 per person.
Hong is passionate about glass and the artful magic of glass painting. “To me even if glass is broken, it is still beautiful and I love how a painting can put it all back together,” says Hong. “I slather glass with gold and silver leaf, then mix it with other shattered remains of lamps, dinnerware and lately, an old shower door. I like imagining the stories glass could tell.”
Hong’s work is available for viewing and purchase at Mary Hong Studio Gallery in Grayton Beach, Florida and online at MaryHongStudio.com. For more information on The Shard Shop, call (850) 842-4440.
